Knepp Castle Outdoor Picnic Concert
The fundraising event at Knepp Castle on the 31st May 2009 was a great success. The location was beautiful, the weather was fine, the music was lively and the donations were generous!
The event attracted 500 people and in all, over £18,000 was raised for the fight against the landfill proposal at Laybrook Brickworks.
MP's Support
Attending the event were Francis Maude (MP Horsham) and Nick Herbert (MP Arundel & South Downs). Both spoke to the crowd and pledged their support to Thakeham Village Action in the battle against the landfill.
Francis Maude said, "Nick and I are with you all the way. I will do all I can, working closely with you so that this wonderful area that we live in is not blighted."
And Nick Herbert added, "This is incredibly important. The flies, noise, lorries, disruption and smell. I will do everything I can as local MP and Shadow Secretary of State for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs to stop it. We must move towards a zero waste policy and put an end to landfill.
Auction
The majority of the money raised came from the auction. The three principal lots, holidays to Kenya, Greece and Menorca, were all won by substantial winning bids, which helped to swell the funds raised. The winning bids were:
| 1. Private Chef | £425 |
| 2. Kenya Safari Holiday | £2,200 |
| 3. Goodwood Flight | £350 |
| 4. Menorca Villa Holiday | £2,300 |
| 5. Take That Tickets | £500 |
| 6. Weekend in La Rochelle | £800 |
| 7. Fly Fishing | £500 |
| 8. Holiday in Spetses | £3,800 |
| 9. Fragilistics Booking | £350 |
TVA would like to thank everyone who donated auction items and also those who gave up their time to help organise the event, not to mention Charles and Issy Burrell for their continued support and use of the castle grounds as a venue.
