Fast Facts

Want to know the major facts and issues but haven't got the time to look at the whole site?

We've put together this list of things you should know.

The Proposal

  • Cory Environmental are to dump 4.7 million tonnes of rotting, stinking waste at Laybrook Brickworks on Goose Green Lane. More...
  • The landfill operation will be active for 30+ years. More...
  • The landfill site is expected to be the size of 120 full size football pitches.

It's bad for us

  • HGVs will be thundering along rural roads every 3 minutes. More...
  • There will be constant foul odours and noise pollution. More...
  • There are dangers to human health, e.g. increased risk of contracting cancer and low birth weights in children. More...
  • There will be significant increases in pests, particularly seagulls, rats & flies. More...
  • Livelihoods destroyed through damage to crops and livestock from increased pests.
  • Businesses and homes will be devalued, not just around the site but along the roads carrying the HGV's to the site. More...
  • Light pollution during twilight hours.
  • Potential increase in council taxes should the UK not meet landfill reduction targets set by the EU - by approving this application, WSCC would not be actively trying to reduce landfill!

It's bad for the environment

  • Landfills are the single largest source of Methane production, a greenhouse gas more than 20 times more powerful than Carbon Dioxide. More...
  • Damage and displacement of wildlife and vegetation. More...
  • Danger of pollution to the many lakes, streams and watercourses around the site. More...

It's not wanted and not needed

  • There are many alternatives to landfill, eg. Mechanical biological treatment, energy from waste plants and anaerobic digestion. More...
  • Alternatives are more environmentally friendly.
  • Alternatives are better for the economy.
  • West Sussex has enough capacity for all municipal household waste already. More...
  • The government and councils must be more proactive in ensuring businesses significantly reduce Commercial & Industrial waste.
  • By approving this application, WSCC would open the door to West Sussex becoming the dumping ground for London’s waste.
  • Landfilling an existing clay pit is the easy option, not the right option.

What you can do

  • If you don't want a landfill site at Laybrook, you need to object to Cory's planning application. The planning application will be open to public consultation very soon. Once this starts, objections can be lodged with the council. Click here to find out how to object.
  • Many people still don't know about the proposal and what it might mean for the local community. We need to raise awareness and get as many people as possible to support the campaign. Please find the time to do the following things:
